Why this number?

Your return is an effective annual rate, converted to monthly growth using i = (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1. The balance grows monthly. End-of-month contributions are added after growth; beginning-of-month contributions are added before it.

SHOWING OUR WORK

Assumptions & methodology

Return convention

Your return is an effective annual rate, converted to monthly growth using i = (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1. The balance grows monthly. End-of-month contributions are added after growth; beginning-of-month contributions are added before it.

Growth and buying power

Contributions = starting balance + monthly contribution × number of months. Growth = projected balance − contributions. Today's purchasing power = future balance / (1 + inflation rate)^years. This is an illustration of constant inflation, not an inflation forecast.

Limits

Returns are hypothetical and constant; markets vary and losses are possible. The model does not calculate tax, TFSA or RRSP contribution room, benefit clawbacks, trading costs, varying returns or changing contributions. Enter a return after fees if you want to reflect management costs.

A worked example

Start with C$10,000, add C$250 at the end of each month and explore a hypothetical 5% annual return over 20 years. Compare the total contributed with the projected growth.
